Really? What I saw was a re-boot of Episode IV

SPOILER ALERT - Anyone who's not seen the 1977 original read no further.

Let's see: a set of plans (sorry, part of a map) get hidden in a droid which then wanders across a desert (check) before falling into the hands of a farmboy (sorry, female scavenger) whilst being hunted by the Galactic Empire (sorry, First Order), led by a bad guy in a mask (sorry - oh no, that was correct, though this time there's a bad gal in a mask as well).

So the droid and the farmboy (scavenger), accompanied by a former Jedi (sorry, former stormtrooper who's probably going to turn out to be a Jedi) set off on a quest and end up at a cantina where they meet Han Solo and Chewbacca (sorry, this time they meet Han and Chewie THEN go to the cantina), where they find that the Empire (First Order) has built a terrible new weapon called a Death Star (sorry, BIGGER Death Star) which nevertheless seems to incorporate a peculiarly convenient weakness (check) - so the Rebel Alliance launch a desperate attack (check) in their X-wing fighters (check) which ... well, if you can't see where this is going you clearly have issues.

Oh, and there's a father-son reveal as well (check).

Yes, it's all done with flair and state-of-the-art effects, and my kids loved it, and there was the odd good moment. And it's way better than The Phantom Menace.

But part VII? Surely just a re-hash of part IV.

well there was ONE big departure: they went ahead and introduced the "new Yoda"
The strong do what they want, the weak do what they must

I have avoided this topic because life has prevented me from seeing this installment before tonight and I didn't want to know anything about it ahead of time. I've got to compliment virtually the entire movie going world for being so disciplined about not giving anything away.

But now I've seen it.

Having been a devoted follower of the franchise since the week that Episode IV opened locally in 1977 I was hoping for something good and I was not disappointed. You can pick nits all you want it was a love letter to older fans like me and at the same time my fifteen year old daughter was fixed on the screen. It was interesting to see someone with the attention span of a mouse click who was not at all well versed in the Star Wars saga soak it up the way she did. She loved it. So did my wife. It's a comic book. Not the Bible. I loved it too. For me the big emotional part was watching Rey hold Luke's light saber in her outstretched hand as he faced her. I can already see a really good episode coming after this and I'm not convinced we have seen the last of a couple of characters. Looking forward to it all.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

So?
The difference between theory and reality is that, in theory, there is no difference between theory and reality.

I honestly thought The Force Awakens was AWESOME! Keep in mind my opinion is coming from someone who hasn't seen the Star Wars movies in about a decade and coming from someone who found Omega Cop to be entertaining.

Moments that had the most impact: SPOILER ALERT! (Highlight in order to view) I was completely and totally heartbroken when it appeared that Poe died in the crash. My heart sank. Then, when I saw him alive and well, I thought to myself "Hell Yeah! Poe is alive! Poe is alive!!!" I was celebrating! lol! My jaw dropped, literally, and I almost shed tears when Han was killed and Chewie went on a rampage because he was grief stricken! Han and Leia had just got reunited! One thing I don't understand is, and maybe I don't understand because I'm a Star Wars idiot, If I remember correctly, Finn mentioned that was was a janitor for the First Order. If that's the case, why was he forced into combat in the beginning of the film? If, indeed everyone are trained for combat, they could have chosen someone better than the janitor. They had more than enough soldiers and could have left him out. He was clearly very inexperienced. Either that or very nervous because he knew he planned on escaping. Then again maybe he chose to go into combat so he could escape. We really don't know. We don't know how things work, or at least, I don't. Also, I thought Luke looked pretty badass! I was really nervous about seeing him at first! I didn't know what to expect!

Finally saw it myself. I walked into the theater expecting to be disappointed, even after my daughter's positive review.
I walked out with a desire to scoop up BB-8 and snuggle him, and to somehow make my way to the Star Wars universe so that I can fulfill my new purpose of existence- to KILL KYLO REN!
I intend to take a week to do the job- longer, if possible. :ugeek:

I really loved all the homage to the original, and the little "Easter eggs" they snuck in. "OMG! I remember that scene from (insert movie/franchise.)"
