Paris Kennedy - Some Tips for the Newly Sober

Postby Duncan Edwards » Thu Feb 25, 2016 1:07 pm

This makes for a bit of interesting reading. It makes me think I must not be emotional enough and it also makes me grateful I've gone 53 years without a drink, smoke, toke, pill, blast, etc. I'd love to hear what more experienced folks think. At very least it's Paris and it's entertaining.

First, allow me to suggest that there IS a middle ground between total abstinence from things like alcohol and use to the point of unconsciousness. For myself I think the latter is pretty stupid and the former is not necessary. In 66 years (ok six days short of that) I have never had as much as three drinks in a day. That is a fact, not a boast. I simply never had the desire. On the other hand, besides four fingers and a thumb, I find a glass of reasonably good wine increases the enjoyment of a good meal.

I think I am agreeing with Paris in asserting that its better (far better) to keep all of one's brain in a state of consciousness whenever possible. Perhaps I should say whenever practical - I do recognize the overwhelming benefit of anesthesia.

Many people will assert that alcohol makes people more emotional. That is complete horse shit! Alcohol tends to increase the outward display of emotion by anesthetizing parts of the brain that keep such things in balance. That is to say, it brings out the display of certain emotions by suppressing others.

Other chemical substances have other effects, of course. I am certain some of those are beneficial, at times and within reason. For myself I would want to use such substances when they were useful in meeting some need - suppression of nausea, for example, if I was undergoing chemotherapy - but I do not want to use them just for some artificial mental entertainment.

And I agree with that. It's just that given certain personality traits I think I'd be right up there with Otis Campbell if I ever gave it a chance. ;)

Indeed there are people who should never go near the stuff, although Otis, aside from being a fictional character, also became the mayor when he quit drinking.

I somewhat lean toward Duncan's thoughts. I've never smoked, drank, drugged, or anything else. Well, not 100% true. I did sniff paint in my younger days, but I had no choice. They would put me in a room, hand me a roller and a paint can, and tell me to move it or get fired! All I got out of that were some clothes that I could never get clean!

But my wife enjoys a nice drink with dinner, and I have no problems with that. I just know that I would easily become worse than Otis if I gave myself half a chance. And the deputies in this area have more than one bullet for their guns and they don't carry them in their shirt pockets!

I had no idea this demon possessed Paris.

I am happy she has exorcised it from her life.

She used to come across as very confident in her ability to party. I guess it caught up with her. Paris is very smart so it's no surprise that she figured it out, dealt with it, and now appears to be sharing the experience. We all know people who never got that far.

With regard to the Governor of California suggestion, she would not be the first with a substance abuse history. Probably not the second either.

The important thing to remember is that you can get sober, and stay sober, but you will never not be an addict. It's a shitty thing to deal with but not accepting this can have disastrous consequences.

Basically, addiciton sucks. I'm glad the worst thing I've ever had to deal with was quitting smoking.
