For Real - How Old Are We?

Just for fun, I did a bit of a statistical analysis of the age distribution data as of a few minutes ago. I used a technique called a chi-square test, which estimates the probability of getting a "sample" result in a survey of this type if certain things are true for the full population under study. Basically, I tested the hypothesis that the membership is equally distributed among the age ranges used in the survey. That is, is the distribution 29, 35, 23, 27 different, in a in terms of probability, from 28,28,28,28. Without going into the arithmetic, the result is that the distribution shown in the survey is different from what one would expect to get if there was an even distribution of ages. Therefore, there are not the same number of people in each age range.

The above is not unexpected. For one thing, the lower age group represents only eight years but the other groups represent ten years. Much more importantly, the number of people in the overall population is not evenly distributed. Even if the same number were born each year, some die each year so the overall population has fewer people in older groups than in younger ones. Nothing surprising there. A better analysis would repeat the analysis but using different values for the expected numbers. The expected number for each age group would be the total number of subjects (114 so far) multiplied by the proportion of people in the overall population of human being (or perhaps those of developed countries, or of the USA). I could not find data on these proportions and no longer have access to a university research library, but an eyeball examination clearly says that the distribution in the survey would come fairly close to that of the population.

I apologize to those who eyes roll back when statistical analysis is brought up. You can either trust me on this, ignore it, or do your own analysis.

Just turned 48 last month- sad to be out of that demographic.

I've really been thinking about mortality the past couple weeks. One of my old buddies- a "brother from another mother"- went to bed on a Sunday night and never woke up. He would have turned 50 in May. So I'm making it a point to get together with as many old friends and family as possible this summer. Also going to start checking things off my "Bucket List" as I can afford to. Building a still and running off a batch of White Lightning is doable- a trip to Arizona to hunt for the Lost Dutchman's Mine isn't right now.

Don't panic!! you can still enjoy our fetish after 65 indeed after 70. Like everything else it all gets slower as you get older but keep on doing what you enjoy
