Syrtis is a latin word meaning both sandbars (in a body of water) as well as quicksand. By adding the suffix -philia to it, you end up with syrtisphilia, the strong attachment or unnatural love of quicksand or "wet sand". It also has a double meaning, as philia in the context of certain nouns can also mean "Shifting" or "shifted". So what you end up with is a word that means both "attraction to wet sand" as well as "shifting sand". Kind of appropriate, eh? :D

Limus is the latin word meaning mud, silt, or slime. That one may be more or less appropriate. I guess in the end, it's whatever we want to call it.

Although, it has to be mentioned that the quicksand fetish itself is psychologically very similar to the fetishes of bondage, sadism and masochism, and shares quite a few subconscious triggers to release hormones with those particular hobbies. It also shares many common themes including induced feelings of danger (controlled fear), and a feeling of entrapment or physical restraint. It can be argued that the quicksand fetish is merely another type of bondage fetish, or even a mixture of bondage fetishism and what is often called "WAM". :geek:

The comments of -some writer guy-on the quicksand fetish are certainly very appropriate to my feelings. The only thing he misses out is the humiliation aspect which is an important part of the fetish for me. Is this a usual part of syrtisphilia or am I in a minority

This point serves to support the idea that a Latin-named philia, or phobia, is a scientific or medical concept. That is, a Latin-named is used to refer to a pre-existing case study or definition. A scientist or medical practitioner writes a case study and proposes a Latin name for the phenomenon described. After some debate and probably revision a consensus is agreed to (more or less) and then the name can apply.

Also, if a consensus can NOT be agreed upon that is usually taken to at least suggest that multiple phenomena are being mixed together and must be separated to be meaningful.

True. And this is one of those cases. It's more like the psychiatrist some years back who tried to coin the term "aquilaphobia" for patients who were afraid of eagles and other birds of prey, but not songbirds. It ended up going nowhere on the notion that eagles are in fact birds, so the fear of eagles alone was just merely another type of Ornithophobia, and didn't justify being a specific condition.

Whether our specific fetish is just a subgenre of another fetish, or a combination of existing ones is the real question. All the technical mumbo-jumbo aside, I have a background in behavioral psychology but I try not to read too much into it or get too rational and scientific about it. It ruins the fun. Sort of like overly analyzing a painting. I like girls in mud and quicksand. I have a few other strange likes, but that's for other sites.

Actually its even premature to even contemplate a name for "this fetish." Is it even a fetish? Which definition or "fetish" are we even talking about? One definition (the strict one) of a fetish is some ordinarily not-sexual object, situation, or element that must be present for a person to be able to engage in sexual behavior. I have personally met hundreds of people who found quicksand to be interesting or sexually stimulating in some way but I have met exactly one who claimed it to be necessary to sexual behavior.

Ehh...It really depends upon the individual. Kind of like the guys that like their wives or girlfriend to dress up like french maids, in leather, like a playboy bunny, etc. Some do it occasionally because it's fun and adds a new element to the sexuality. Some do it because they're bored with regular intercourse with their partner, some because that particular look peaks their interest in that way, and maybe a few because they can only be turned on by that look. That's really the problem in trying to categorize and label anything having to do with sexuality, you can't overlook the individual psychological factors involved in each person. I like using the dog model. Three guys both like dogs as pets. They have a deep respect and admiration for canines, and all three agree on that. But one likes beagles, another likes Great Danes, and the third likes Chihuahuas, so they never get along about which dog is the best, and calling them all "dog lovers" to their face seems impersonal and generalized to them.

With me personally, it's the dramatic quality of the scenario, even a bit of loving the element of danger. Very few things I've done in terms of work or pastime lack a certain degree of danger or risk. So quicksand for me is another extension of that, and one that can be shared erotically with a special lady or in my fantasies. But I digress.

I doubt we'll ever answer the original question. This is really fun though, delving into the psychology of all this. I've thought it all over quite a bit over the years, but I didn't know anyone else was. Heck, I didn't really think I'd be able to have conversations like THIS when I joined up. I'm really glad to have met you guys. :D

Earlier on in this thread, I did suggest "Syrtimlutumophilia", where "Syrtim" referred to quicksand and "lutum" referred to soil, dirt, mire, mud, loam.

Hmmmm... Googling "lutum" also yielded this interesting page: 8-)

It's a bit more complicated than that. :) For straight-up love of sinking in quicksand, I would chose katapínophilia- the love of being engulfed. And its twin would of course be katapínophobia- the fear of being engulfed.

And then we have the crossover with the WAM fetishes, and (my personal favorite) the Damsel in Distress fetish:
https://drmarkgriffiths.wordpress.com/2015/03/26/bowling-a-maiden-over-a-very-brief-look-at-damsel-in-distress-fetishes/

And then of course there is the bondage aspect of being stuck, and somebody even referred to quicksand as "Geovore" once. :ugeek:

Thixophilia? Demersiophilia?
