No, they dumped a lot worse contaminated waste in the area as well, and they aren't worried about that at all. Yup. That's why they use pools of water to store used core rods for reactors. In terms of bang for your buck there's no better shielding.
The last time I got into a debate about nuclear power the moron told me with a straight face that the electricity from nuclear power plants was radioactive and gives you cancer. From then on pledged to myself just to tune the envirotards out. There's no hope for them.
