I bought a new truck (finally)

Postby Jon Smith » Mon Oct 19, 2015 10:40 pm

This may be a bit of a long story but I'm writing it to explain why I needed a truck so badly.
When I was 17, I got my first vehicle, a 1995 V6 Chevy silverado 1500 pickup, but it was a cheap second hand truck that had too many problems (costed $2500 used). When I was 19, I got rid of it because there was a broken window, the shocks were shot, it had a misfiring cylinder, it's faulty brakes almost got me killed and I was angry.
I was carless while I was finishing college, but one day, this happened about 5 years ago. My grandfather, who has never ever bought me a birthday gift before (until that day), was so kind as to pay half the price of my next car. We got me a brand new beautiful 2SS V8 with over 400hp (But it costed almost 50 grand). 8-)
At first, I had tons fun with this epic car, but eventually I was tired of worrying all the time about someone messing with it. I also had very little storage space with the car, and I couldn't even take it down my Aunt's driveway (where I lived recently) because the car was 2-wheel drive, low to the ground, and my aunt's driveway was a complete disaster (tire tracks pressed it so far down that the car got stuck on the middle). I had to park it at the top of the driveway. :x
I will keep this car forever as a memory, because my grandfather died of a heart attack 3 years ago.

I matured, and I felt that I needed something more useful. Which this is what leaded to me getting a new truck.
I bought a 2015 Silverado 3500 V8 diesel with a crew cab, long bed, and 4WD. This was my dream vehicle! 8-) I have been saving up for this for the last 2 years, in which I already had $30 grand in savings (the truck costed a whopping 60 grand).
Problem is, it does not fit in most parking spaces. It costed even more than the car, and my friends and family hate it. But it can tow over 6 tons.
And even though I have this badass truck, I still love my other car too.

Cool. Hope you have it for quite a while.
I think we can tell a story or two of our first vehicle. Like I saw a video once of a pro wrestler that got his first car when he was a kid. He paid like $50.00 for some fancy car (can't rememer the name (let's say trans am) and whatever the car that was like giving it away. ANyways he hadn't even seen the car and he brought it. Later when his dad came home they went to pick it up. The dad said he'd drive the kids car home and the kid would drive the dad's car home.
When the dad backed the car out of the driveway and shifted in forward, the car wouldn't budge. He reshifted a couple times when the guy that just sold the car said "Oh by the way forward gear doesn't work." So the whole trip home the dad drove the car backwards. Whenever they'd stop at a stop sign/signal the dad turned, faced forward and gave his son what could only be described as "The dad look." When they got the car home the kid looked it over even closer and found out that 90% of the wiring was shot. A week later a stranger came by and offered to buy the car for $100.00. The kid said "I'm not going to be like the other guy. I'm going to be honest with you" and told him what was wrong with the car. The stranger still wanted it and drove off it driving backwards.

Long bed FTW. Might be hard to park but at least it's useful. I'd do a 6" lift with some agressive ATs (don't buy MTs unless for dedicated off road use that beast will shred them on pavement), a set of stacks and call it done. Could go overboard and chip the motor but not really necessary.

From the day I paid $750.00 for a ten year old 1969 Ford LTD Sedan I wanted a full grown pickup. I still want one but after a Toyota and two Ford Rangers I have to say that a small pickup fits best for what I do and that includes mud video production.

Congratulations on the new rig. I know it's a great feeling.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

In spite of lots of co-workers telling me I needed a pickup truck I could never see why. I still don't. Its true that on very rare occasions some rough roads could not be used, but those occasions do not warrant the expense and other drawbacks of a truck. Its also true that I have a lot of occasions where I need to transport more stuff than the car I have can fit, but a trailer is a LOT cheaper than a truck and does the job, so last fall I got one of those. For me, a motor vehicle is a means for getting from one place to another reliably. I have a Ford Focus and before that I had a Ford Escort. The only characteristic my car must have, other than being reliable and within my budget, is it has to be red.

I actually did have a trailer once about the size of a fifth wheeler (we built back in 2007). But after I got rid of the old truck, the trailer just sat and rotted in my Aunt's "yard" ever since because the camaro can't pull it (or even get anywhere near it), and she lives where it rains and floods often.
They want me to come tow it away now that I have a new truck. Unfortunately, that won't be easy because the trailer is falling apart, rusty, moldy, overgrown by ivy and other weeds, wheels half buried, and other problems. It'd be easier to just tear it down and haul the debris away.
I plan to build a new trailer (I'd pull with my new truck) that is big enough to live in, (having a stove, refrigerator, microwave, bed, TV, etc.) maybe even big enough to fit the 2SS in as well (There are a number of reasons why it can't always be parked outside). So if I ever got evicted from the rental house I'm living in now, I'd be able to live in my trailer and park somewhere else in Portland (problem is, people may not like this, but I can move when someone complains).
Currently, there is no garage space for my truck, which is too large to fit anyway. The garage is occupied by my 2SS and my roommate's shit hooptie.

This is a most unusual vehicle to see on the road. I like it, but I wouldn't want to drive one everyday. It would definitely get attention, which you might not want.
My Silverado seems to blend right in, even though it's big (with the 8.2ft bed). People would notice the [insert fancy car] a few cars down the road instead.
This is why I don't want to drive my 2SS everyday, as it stands out and gets attention, even though camaros are common. One time someone tried to steal it while I was in the store and it was parked right next to a ferrari at the time. That's why I won't drive it downtown anymore.

Why does it have to strictly be red?
